After watching the IDEO video, my first thoughts ran something along the lines of “I want to work there.” The attitude of the man behind the genius, Dave Kelly, seems perfectly suited to the kind of work that is required to produce a quality design. His approach focuses on the generation of ideas and building up on others’ thoughts, allowing employees to be creative without having to worry about who is in charge of who or having their idea discouraged.
Kelly gives us several key points to think about when we engage in the design process: don’t defer your ideas, don’t dismiss ideas even if they sound crazy, fail often to succeed faster, turn to the experts before you try to solve the problem, and work hard but keep it fun. As he said in the video, “you aren’t going to see a bunch of stiffs invent anything.” The greatest minds of our time were all considered eccentrics, but clearly the products and ideas they have come up with have served to change our lives again and again.
